Racehorse Gallops
Field and Canopy was commissioned to provide Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) services to inform a planning application for the creation of racehorse gallops on an area of arable cereal crop in Herefordshire.
We undertook the required site surveys, prepared an EcIA in accordance with best practice guidelines and were retained to produce a Biodiversity Gain Plan and 30 year Habitat Management & Monitoring Plan.

Comprehensive baseline assessments to identify key species, habitat health and BNG opportunities.
Working closely with colleagues, we developed a scheme that would satisfy the needs of both the applicant and the LPA.
Our HMMP will now guide management of the site, ensuring that a minimum of 10% increase in Biodiversity Units are achieved on-site.
Outcomes
The project has been granted full planning permission, with all ecological planning conditions discharged. The gallops will result in an overall net gain in biodiversity through the conversion of arable land to permanent pasture. Ongoing management will ensure that species diversity and abundance is increased over the next 30 years.
